The Puglia area of southeastern Italy is seldom on the radar for most tourists. Accessible by train or plane to Bari, the area is however best explored by car. We chose the small town of Cisternino for our base, due to it's central location, small town vibe, and opportunities for cycling, dining, and exploring. For the same price as a moderate hotel, we rented a 2 bedroom home, complete with a beautiful garden and private, gated car park. The owner also arranged for us to visit a cheese making factory, olive oil press and even invited us to her home to an authentic Italian pasta making lesson. Great alternative vacation.
This small authentic Puglian town is perfect as a base to explore this beautiful area of Italy.
