For the best views of Mount Cook without actually being on it, apparently the Hooker Valley Track is the way to go. It is a fairly long track, suggesting around 3 hours or more for round trip. The day I went, unfortunately there was a cloud that hovered over the peak of Mount Cook, making it just about the only thing I couldn't see. The wind was also very strong which made it a fun and interesting walk through Hooker Valley. Even without the views at the foot of Mount Cook, a highlight of the walk was ending at Hooker Lake and being able to touch the glacial lake and even pick up pieces of iceberg floating near the shore!
