Holy Cross cemetery is a small cemetery by Brooklyn standards, but is pretty big compared to other places. It is 96 acres. Since the neighborhood it’s in, East Flatbush, does not have any parks, people in the community actually visit it a lot to talk walks and just be outside. You can see cyclists, people teaching their kids to use tricycles, and joggers here everyday and lots of people in the neighborhood rush to get their exercise in before the gates close at 4:30. It was built in 1849, before there was a very big population of Catholics to serve in Brooklyn, which seems hard to believe. It was deliberately placed in the geographic center of kings county, which is all of Brooklyn.
