Winona, is a sleepy but attractive Mississippi River town, old and historically prosperous by Minnesota standards. There’s a lot to see here – museums, historic churches, lakeside parks. You can ramble along the river bluffs, take in some local theater, or have a nice meal. But just wandering around looking at beautiful old buildings can be fun. The town hall is impressive for a town of 28,000. And there are some mighty pretty churches built of native stone and brick. But for any Minnesotan, it’s a thrill to stand in front of the world headquarters of the J.R. Watkins company, purveyors of the freshest black pepper, the sweetest cinnamon, and the purest vanilla extract since 1868.
