Located right next to the Salem Custom House is the historic Derby House. The house was built by Elias Hasket Derby in 1762 as a wedding present for his wife, Elizabeth Crowninshield. Elias Derby was one of the wealthiest merchants in New England in the 18th century. The son of a ship captain, Elias was active in equipping privateer ships during the American Revolution. After the Revolution, Elias owned a fleet of ships which ran the 18th century trade routes throughout the Atlantic. Eventually he became one of the first merchants to trade goods with China and the far east.
