We spent a few days in Budapest in May and started our first day there with a City Tour. Our first stop was Heroes’ Square - the largest square in Budapest. The bus dropped us next to the Art Museum and we crossed the street to the large open air monument area. Our guide told us that construction started just before 1900 and that its purpose was to commemorate the 1,000 year history of Hungary. I was very much reminded of Red Square - large imposing monuments and columns and a huge open concrete and brick area. It is quite interesting to walk around and the monuments are impressive. I did not like being continually approached by people trying to sell me things, but no one was aggressive.
