The historic Volcano House Hotel is right inside the park at the crater rim. We didn’t stay in the hotel, but we had a lovely dinner in the restaurant. Reservations are a must. Even with our reservation, we had a 45 minute wait for a table. But that was fine. We got drinks at the bar and sipped them in the darkened viewing lounge, watching the glow of the seething lava inside the inner caldera reflecting through the fog. The food was delicious, and not exorbitantly expensive. Driving back to our B&B in the fog was a bit of an adventure, but other than that we had no regrets.
