Hannibal the Mule

Highland Falls, NY, United States
21 Kudos
It is not surprising that the mascot at West Point would be named Hannibal. This famous Carthaginian is, of course, one of the most successful generals in history. It was a bit surprising to me, however, that this mascot was a mule. Mules are not generally considered one of natures prettiest creations. But upon further thought, I realized armies have been using mules for centuries and acknowledging that history is entirely appropriate for students learning the arts of war. This statue was located just outside the West Point gates and I am sure is a popular statue amongst the cadets
