Guthrie's African American Story

Guthrie, OK, United States
20 Kudos
While Oklahoma is not a part of the public's consciousness concerning African American history, since it was not part of the Confederacy, and long was known as Indian Territory, it has an important story to tell. Here Jim Crow laws took effect just as the territory was transitioning toward statehood, and notorious lynchings and race massacres were a tragic part of that story. An exhibit in Guthrie tells in several interpretative panels several aspects of the African American presence here from the days of the land rush. I was surprised to learn that at one point there was talk of carving out an all black state within Oklahoma, something which obviously never came to fruition.
