The welcome center at Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda is a good introduction to the park’s wildlife and activities. Here is where the entry fee is paid, and everyone must fill out a registration form and sign a waiver. It is not required to hire a guide, but is a very good idea for their expertise and to support the local community from which they come. A small cafe offers light meals and “to go” sandwiches and beverages. The display area is informative, with an interesting feature being a comparison of animal skulls. It is fun to try to guess which animal each comes from before checking the label. The park has the Big 5, but cats are few, and most visitors don’t see them.
