Golden Bear Bridge

Klamath, CA, United States
17 Kudos
Flag
The flood of 1964 that wiped out the small town of "Old" Klamath, not to be confused with the rebuilt Klamath on higher ground along Highway 101, was a doozy indeed. It not only took out the town, but the old Douglas Memorial Bridge as well, which featured 2 large concrete bears in honor of California's official state animal, the grizzly bear. When the new bridge was built over the Klamath River on the new highway 101, they installed 2 new bears at each end of the bridge, giving passersby a warm bear welcome to the great state of California not far over it's border with Oregon to the north.
