While road-tripping around the desert in California, we visited Furnace Creek which is an Oasis in the middle of Death Valley. It's on National Park land and has both a high end resort and modest family "ranch" accommodations available. The little "town" (more like a giant campground) even has a post office, general store and a few restaurants. We stayed at the ranch and enjoyed it immensely. It was a surprising wonderful stay that included swimming in the salt water pool, eating pizza around the campfire that is outside the general store and taking a ranger led stargazing expedition that was off the charts.
