During our stay at the Best Western Plus on the Oregon coast in Lincoln City, the weather was atrocious. Cold, windy and rainy was the order of the 2 nights we were there. The second night we ventured down to the lobby and breakfast area to stretch our legs, and were pleasantly surprised to see the breakfast area lit up, and stocked with some good hot coffee & teas, pastries and snacks. A group of friends had set up camp for a card game there, and the warm ambience was perfect for the nasty weather outside. But the definite highlight was finding this big crock pot full of salmon chowder piping hot for the taking. Now I'm a huge fan of clam chowder, but I had never had the opportunity to try a salmon chowder, much less and alder smoked salmon chowder. Well let me just say that it's like clam chowder on steroids. The smoky salmon added a whole 'nother dimension to the whole chowder experience, and I was instantly in love. We scooped up one, then another bowl of the luscious liquid and if it hadn't been for needing to not be greedy and save some for other guests, I could have sat there and worked my way through that entire crock pot. But the after effect might not have been as pleasant as the eating, so I tore myself away reluctantly and headed back to the room. I never saw this kind of chowder anywhere else, but it will be forever in my dreams and quest for another experience of this super-chowder!
