Fort Sumter is just off the coast of Charleston. When we were visiting, we took the ferry over. It was a chilly day, especially sitting outside on the ferry! The boat ride is guided, which is nice so you know what you are looking at, and it takes about 45 minutes. The remains of the fort are mostly the walls. There is a courtyard in the middle, but there aren't any rooms where soldiers would stay. There is a nice little museum. This is where the first shot of the Civil War was fired and it defended Charleston for many years during the war until it was captured by the north.
