El Tamarindo is a hip El Salvadoran restaurant that was located very close to my hotel the last time I stayed in Washington DC. I used to only see Pupusas, the well known staple of many el Salvadoran restaurants as well as El Salvador itself, at food trucks and little stands at festivals. More and more, however, you can find cool hip ones that are different than the old standard , yet still just as delicious. Pupusas are made from masa and they are kind of like a thick, discus tortilla with a filling, often cheese, chicharron, or beans. If you get lucky you can find zucchini ones. They also come with small sides of pickled slaw and a red hot sauce. Order ahead because they take longer than other foods known as street foods!
