El Castillo - Xunantunich

Rising 130 feet above ground level at the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Xunantunich in western Belize, El Castillo is the largest structure in the large complex. The city was a major ceremonial center for the Mayans, and contains 25 temples and palaces. El Castillo (the Castle), lies at the exact center of the complex and is thought to have been a multi-use building that served as a dwelling, shrine and administrative structure. Large stucco friezes on the summit depict various symbols related to the moon, Venus and the the sun god of the Maya as is thought to have been constructed around 800 AD in the Late Classic period of the civilization.
