Dusty wonderful roadside bedrock

Syracuse, KS, United States
13 Kudos
I have always learned that millions of years ago the middle of the country – Kansas in particular – was once covered by an ancient, relatively shallow, marine sea. Dramatic and fascinating fossils have been uncovered from this part of the country that have provided crucial information about organisms that have since gone extinct. Stepping out of the car on our road trip through the state, we wanted to get out and explore a little as a break from driving for so long. We didn’t see any of those amazing fossils, but the sedimentary rock quickly weathering away beneath the soils was clue enough that we were in the right territory!
