After touring Pompeii and Amalfi, we set our sights on driving across the country to the eastern province of Puglia in southern Italy. After a beautiful ferry trip from Amalfi to Salerno, we made our way to the rental car office to get our vehicle. It worked out very well to rent from Salerno, rather than trying to negotiate the horrible traffic and confusion of Naples or Rome. Even though it is much easier to navigate your way out of the city of Salerno to open highways, it is still a nerve wracking experience to encounter the aggressiveness of Italian drivers for the first time. There is a calm order though, with very little horn blowing or yelling, but everyone expects each other to keep moving and recognize when it is your turn!
Renting a car in Salerno is much easier to handle for the first timer than trying to navigate the streets of a larger city like Rome or Naples.
