Dirt bike in the mountains

Puerto Vallarta, Jal., Mexico

While in Puerto Vallarta we rented dirt bikes, dual sports actually, but most our riding was done in the mountains on dirt or gravel roads. We rented the bikes from a place called bike Mexico, which is just a German guy and his Mexican wife running the business out of their house/garage. Very nice people and multi lingual. Hearing their travel stories alone was worth the visit. Anyways Juergen, the owner, put us each on Honda 250s. A little low powered but they were what he had and each bike was only 70 USD for 24 hours. Juergen gave us some general maps and pointed us in the direction of San Sebastián, about a 2 hour ride. There we would see a small mountain village and a mountain peak above that. This in my opinion was the best way to experience real Mexico.
We made it to San Sebastián and had lunch and the only restaurant there. The ride there was awesome. Many scenic views and twisty roads. After lunch we continued toward the mountain peak. We got turned around and asked a local for directions. He hopped on his dirt bike and led us to the trail we were looking for. Another 45 minutes later we were at the top. Being the naive Wisconsin boys we were (still are) we left or gear and bikes and went for a short hike to get some pictures. We did not see anyone on our way up and no sign of anyone at the top.. 15 minutes tops. When we came back, my key was missing and another guys gloves were gone ( I guess this is the real Mexico lol). After discussing our options, no cell phone service and nearest town 30-40 minutes away mind you, we decided we couldn't leave a bike at the top, knowing someone must have took the keys. So, we let gravity do the work and I coasted down the mountain in neutral. Getting off to push up any inclines we encountered. Finally, we made it back to San Sebastián where we were able to find a phone and sheepishly call Juergen and interrupt his day. He left the party he was at to make the two hour drive to get us the spare key, not to mention having bike problems of his own on his way. He was not in the least mad though. His main concern was that no one got hurt and he was impressed that we were able to coast all the way down the mountain. He even took us on a mini tour of the area. He charged us for the lost/stolen items, as expected but was very understanding. I will definitely rent from him again next time around.
