December in Paris

Paris, IDF, France

So in early December to complete our travels for 2014, we decided to round out my girlfriend's work summit in London with a weekend jaunt to Paris. It's one of those locations that is on many people's travel lists to see. Granted, we went in December, so the cold does limit it a little, but we still had a great time, though it was sobering to hear the recent events there. I even enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Much more diversity than the other European cities I have been to, and despite the reputation, I found the French we came in contact with to be somewhat friendly and welcoming (maybe some cultural tips from the walking tour helped us out...but I could definitely contrast this with our experience in Spain). This also turned out to be the first trip I successfully used frequent flyer miles to get to a destination, and it felt good not to have to shell out an arm and leg just to get there! After arrival in Dublin and London, we went by train to Paris, had a night trip to The Louvre, and a walking tour throughout the sites the following day.

After our walking tour, we went to the Montmarte region for lunch, and then we went walking around to see Sacre Coeur, and then down the hill to see the famous Moulin Rouge. Then the next day we did a day trip to Versailles (one walk through the palace and surrounding gardens, and you can plainly see why there was a revolution), and spent our last night by the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, and the Christmas Market on the Champs-Elysses. It is amazing by night (the rumors are true), even in the cold. It would be nice to come back though in warmer weather

Of course this was a must on our arrival, but we wanted to go on an off-peak time, so we went the same night we arrived (Friday night). There was still a decent crowd. As many will tell you, you can't do it all in one day/night, and this was true. So many exhibits! Truly amazing.

Food/art at Le Bistro du Périgord, around the corner from our hotel, was on display. We just stumbled on this place, based on some TripAdvisor reviews. The presentation was amazing, and the food was just as good. The owner was one of those folks who have had this restaurant for over 20 yrs, and pictures on the wall with various celebrities. If I go back to Paris, I would definitely make a return visit to this place
