The Central Market (Mercado Central) in San Jose was a supper crowded, but a great place to literally get a taste of the local life in San Jose. The place looks like a maze with narrow walkways and lots of vibes filled with sights and smells. Place is very inexpensive and is not geared towards tourists which makes it much more cost efficient. You can easily get a glimpse of the day to day life in the city, as this place is for hard working locals and serves the community. They have great coffee. One recommendation is to pay with cash and not with a credit card, like most locals, so you can really get the "real" price of your merchandise..
