We stopped off the Old Northern Highway not too far out of Maskall since someone in our party needed the relief offered by a porcelain convenience. I walked down the road a piece to take a look at the river when I observed this unique alternative to a proper bridge. The locals had set up a motorless barge of sorts, controlled and operated by cables spanning the river which were used to pull the barge one way or the other. I wondered why no one bothered with a bridge since that seemed like the simpler, long term solution. Apparently this is a private enterprise, not supported by the government, so there’s your answer. Anyway, it was a cool and interesting sight to see.
