One of the highlights of our trip to Scotland was a ride on the West Highland Line for a scenic ride with Champagne (an upgrade, but certainly worth it in our opinion. The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a railway viaduct (elevated on a series of masonry arches) on the West Highland Line in Glenfinnan, Inverness-shire, Scotland. In addition to the ride over the viaduct (the real highlight of this journey, explanation below) the viaduct offers amazing views of the Glenfinnan Monument and Loch Shiel below. If you enjoy television and movies based in the United Kingdom you have almost certainly seen this iconic bridge. Recently it was featured in an episode of The Crown as the Royal Train made its way to Her Majesty's Scottish estate Balmoral. It also appeared in four of the Harry Potter films as Harry made his way too/from Hogwarts. The Glenfinnan Viaduct has even been featured on banknotes from the Royal Bank of Scotland. Including its appearance in 2007 on the £10 note.
If you want to take a ride on the train we would suggest purchasing your tickets early, particularly if there are a group of you. With assigned seats and a small number of seats, tickets can sell out quickly particularly during peak tourist seasons.
