Creative Project Builds Community’s Support for Park

Kayonza, Province de l'Est, Rwanda
10 Kudos
For the Akagera National Park the Rwandan government has developed a program called “Community Freelance Guides” to help local park neighbors benefit from the park, and to encourage them to realize the animals are worth more to them alive - poaching hurts everyone. My guide, Bosco (on the right) did a great job of spotting wildlife and offered knowledgable information about the animals and plants of the parks. The community guides receive training and supplement the work of professional guides. The plan also gives flexibility to staff for peak seasons without needing to hire so many people in the less busy times.
