Costa Rica is a small country, about 50,100 square feet in size, which would equate to about the size of West Virginia (using the States as a reference), a land of 5 million people. In 1502 Columbus landed and saw the natives wearing gold, so the land was called Costa Rica……”Rich Coast.” More than twenty-five percent of the land is protected. Limon means “lemon” but they do not grow lemons there, they do grow bananas. Supposedly there was One lemon tree in the entire city, and it became a reference point for people to use to give and receive directions… would take a right at the lemon tree, etc. We had a great history lesson with our guide as we traveled to see some of the jungle.
