Controversial highway signs

Wahpeton, ND, United States
13 Kudos
If you drive through North Dakota you will see highway signs with an indian head on it. This one I saw at a sale in Wahpeton — it is an older street sign, but it’s not too different than the current signs. However, the current signs are being phased out and replaced with a sign that includes the shape of the state rather than the head. You may recall on the news there was a lot of controversy involved with the University of North Dakota’s name and logo — The Fighting Sioux. They were forced to eventually change the name and logo. The ND Department of Transportation says this change has nothing to do with the retirement of UNDs logo. Regardless of your opinion on the matter, I do think that everyone can agree that Native Americans are a HUGE part of North Dakota’s history and culture.
