The painted houses of Willemstad in Curacao are probably the main attraction of the island. It almost feels like that a little bit of Amsterdam was imported to the Caribbean which is kind of true since Curacao is one of the three islands of the Dutch Antilles. Legend has it that the former governor suffered from bad headaches. He believed that his condition was made even worse by the sun’s reflection on the white buildings of Willemstad, so he simply forbid the use of white paint all over town and that’s how the long history and tradition of the colorful landhuizen of Curacao started…
