About 16 miles outside of Alamogordo is a fascinating place called "White Sands National Monument". The monument consists of a large field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. the reason why it is so blinding white in the first place. The area is more than 4,000 feet above sea level and is the largest of its kind in the entire world. It is impressive but admittedly there is not much to do. It is kind of seen it, done it...Interestingly, the monument is nearly surrounded by military installations such as the White Sands Missile Range and the Holloman Air Force Base. It is said that the one or other missile landed mistakingly on the White Sand National Monument. So maybe it is a good idea to check the sky for missiles from time to time!
