San Pedro Claver was a Jesuit missionary and priest from Spain who viewed the suffering of slaves in that evil trade and dedicated his life to working on their behalf. He lived a life of risk and adventure in the 17th century and in the 20th century was named a defender of human rights. His main work was at Cartagena, Colombia, where a 1580 church bears his name, with impressive views of the old city.
