I was gifted with an incredibly beautiful day upon arrival in Madrid, and once I checked into my hotel, I decided I'd better take advantage of the sunshine and do some exploring by foot. My first stop was the incredible Buen Retiro Park, one of Madrid's largest and most beautiful urban green areas. The land covers over 300 acres, and according the city website, over 15,000 trees. It's been a part of the city for much of its recent history, from when it was created by the monarchy back in 1680 to when it became a public park in the 19th century. Not to mention, the park is filled with beautiful architecture in the form of arches and ornate metal gateways, as well as impressive statuary. It's quite regal and sure to impress even the most high brow traveler.
