The bridge system in the Annapurnas is truly incredible. The money for it must come from the trekkers using them, but I have never hiked anywhere else that had such substantial constructions so frequently in so lightly inhabited an area. Some of them connect roads and towns and villages, but others do not seem to lead to anything on the other side. The countless crisscrossing steel wire bridges that cover many rivers and chasms save countless hours from trekking down and up again. But get on one of these and be followed on by a villager with a donkey or ox and be prepared for a nerve racking swing across a lethal drop.
