When I pulled in to Sauk Centre, the street I drove down was lined with historic houses and a beautiful mural painted on the side of a historic building.
There was a sign in the yard of Sinclair Lewis’s boyhood home, making it clear from a distance that this home is not just an ordinary home. I had heard of Sinclair Lewis, but didn’t know much about him. He died several decades before I was born. He was the first writer in the US to receive the Nobel Prize. He also had a profound impact on American culture, more so than many other writers. His life was not perfect and like many famous creatives, he suffered from alcoholism.
If you have an interest in Sinclair Lewis this town is worth a stop. It’s a cute little town that I can only describe as charming with its historic homes and Classic “Main Street” feel.
