Murano is an outlying island about 30 minutes from Venice city proper. It is actually a very fun ride just to go out to the island itself! We took off one morning and found ourselves at the local boat "bus" and arrived first at Murano, which is an island full of glass makers. They were banished from Venice itself because of fear of fires. We walked around the various shops, had lunch at a local restaurant (which there are many) and spent some time viewing the glass makers themselves. My wife had read about a "good" shop so we headed there to watch the artists. We ended up purchasing a couple of gorgeous wine glasses to bring home as a remembrance of our time. The glass is world renowned and definitely worth the time to see how it is made.
