Running from Cumberland, Maryland to Washington, DC, the Chesapeake-Ohio Canal is an amazing trail stretching through nature and history. Originally built in the early 1800s as a canal to move goods from the frontier regions of Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, the canal eventually became a major rail supply line. When that was abandoned, the current trail was created along the old railroad beds and towpaths of the canal.
