So I've been digging and organizing my old scanned pics from our pre-digital age (many of you youngsters will never know the joy of changing out rolls of 35mm, carrying them to the photoshop, and waiting 4 or 5 days to see what was usually a 60-70% successful photoshoot). So anyways, here's one from back in the day of one of our favorite places that's no longer there. The hotel at Gulf State Park was built in 1974 and was the place my family usually stayed on beach trips when we weren't roughing it over in the campground. It was reasonably priced to be accessible for most citizens, and a beautiful place at the time, so it felt like tax money well spent for a change. They had a nice conference center in the middle, with a pool and snack bar that were also available for anyone camping at the state park campground down the road. So when camping, we would load up the kids and gear, and drive over to the beach here. It was super nice to set up the tent, and walk over to the pool for burgers to carry out to the beach, and let the kids take a dip in the pool to refresh from the sand and salt. Unfortunately, the whole complex was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. A brand new complex is set to open later this year, been a long time coming. I've yet to hear the hotel prices though, but I'll bet there not the deal they were back then.
