The Basilica Santa Croce (Basilica of the Holy Cross) is the principle Franciscan church in Florence, Italy. Located in Piazza di Santa Croce not very far from the famous Duomo. This Basilica is famous for being the burial place of many famous Italians, including Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli and many more. This is how the Basilica also became known as the “Temple of the Italian Glories.” Construction of the present building began in 1294 and was consecrated in 1442. Surrounding the Piazza there are shops and restaurants and there were street entertainers putting on their shows as well. This is a really cool place to visit. My wife found some really nice handmade table runners in one of the shops.
