Budapest in one word: twee. Leisurely stroll alongside the historic Danube River and marvel at the beautiful architecture, watching the small, adorable trams go by. See Parliament, a pretty recreation of London's Parliament, the Shoes on the Danube monument (a touching tribute to the 20k Jews shot in that spot -- copper 1940s "shoes" line the Danube), St. Stephen's Church, and end up at the Lion Fountain, starting point for many of the free walking tours you'll find around the city.
If you go in August, prime tourist season, be prepared for a sticky heat! Carry lots of water. There is a small convenience store next to the Danube near the Shoes monument selling water and ice cream.
