A Spring Weekend in Austin, TX

Austin, TX, United States

My husband went to college near Austin, TX and raves about it's awesomeness at practically every opportunity :) I was looking forward to enjoying the great outdoors during our quick trip this June to visit family there and was not disappointed. From wakeboarding on Lake Travis, to taking a dip in Barton Springs and checking out the quirky art scene, Austin really has something for everyone!

Bars and nightlife

Hotel San José
Hotel San José
Have to admit the super hipster Hotel San Jose is a little out of our price range, but you can still enjoy its cool vibes both by grabbing a drink at the poolside bar, as well as enjoying the killer breakfast tacos, pastries and more at the adjacent Jo's coffee bar.

Culture and experiences

1720 S 1st St
1720 S 1st St
A famous Austin landmark for your Instagram! :) Maybe not worth traveling for if you're not in the neighborhood but, if you stop by the Roadhouse Relics gallery it is literally right around the corner! Stop across the street for a visit to the other gallery and artisan gelato shop to make an afternoon of it.
Roadhouse Relics
Roadhouse Relics
This industrial neon studio is only open by appointment, but you can see most of the incredible work through the windows. Super unique part of the quirky Austin art scene and right across the street from another great gallery as well (and a gelato shop! :) )

Hotels

Courtyard Austin-University Area
Courtyard Austin-University Area
The outside of this Courtyard looks a little sketchy but inside they have done a complete and stylish renovation. There is a Starbucks/food bar available for purchase as well as the standard Mariott Market. Honestly, we stayed here to be closer to family, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend the location if you're spending most of your time in downtown Austin, as it's a bit of a hike and traffic is terrible at rush hour.

Restaurants

1722 S Congress Ave

Wahoo's is a great lunch stop for delicious, filling, no-frills fish tacos in a fun, punk rock environment. Earnest staff, good prices and a great neighborhood spot.

Shopping

TOMS Austin
TOMS Austin
I was itching to get back to TOM'S after our last trip to Austin, remembering their amazing selection of sunglasses. Love that they're a force for good in the world and that you can even get an iced coffee at the in-house coffee bar while you shop!
Allens Boots
Allens Boots
Even city slickers need to check out this boot mecca. It is completely overwhelming and a real treat to see the vast number of styles available and daydream about the perfect pair you'd sport if you were a local!
STAG

STAG Provisions for Men has everything you need for the well-styled man in your life :) Lots of quirky finds and great for gifts/souvenirs as well. Not cheap but definitely unique, high-quality goods for your urban hipster Austin vibe
