A Jungle Kayak Adventure/Costa Rica

PUNTA UVA, Costa RicaThis is on the southeastern shores of Costa Rica, which has the Caribbean Sea. It was so tranquil and yet a lot of fun can be had here. It is a great place to take your family or significant other to at the beach and relax and/or play in the ocean, surf or go sea kayaking. Here you can also kayak up a river to where just a small creek comes into a pool of water, which is the head of the river. The journey up-river is peaceful and full of wild-life. We saw quite a few sloths, a couple of mama’s with their babies, and stopped our kayaks at a bundle of vines where a very cute young sloth was climbing down to get a drink of water from the river. I always thought that sloths were ugly, and just wanted to see cute monkeys, but seeing the sloths in real life with my own two eyes in their own habitat gave me a new appreciation for them. The little cute young one climbing down the vine is what really stole my heart, I believe. Oh, and they don’t move as slow as I was lead to believe. The sloth on the vine wasn’t fast, but kept a steady pace moving down putting one hand under the other and it was not like watching an animal in slow motion. It was quite interesting to watch him or her. There were a lot of turtles along the way, which at some places we were trying to manuever around them, because there were so many. The turtles would push themselves off the logs or rocks they were sunbathing on to swim for cover; often times there were more turtles than you realized. It was quite fun and they are cute. There were ducks and other colorful birds of which I don’t know the names, but the best thing for me on this kayak trip was when we saw the little white faced monkeys!!! We stopped and watched them swing around in the trees and come over to the river and swing across it!!! There were 4 of them, 2 of which were a mother and baby. They were as curious about us, as we were about them. When we got to the swimming hole, it was a very refreshing break, where there is plenty of room to sit outside of the water afterwards to dry off a little and have a drink and a snack, before you head back down toward the sea. Be sure to take note of the beautiful foliage as well. The guide for kayaking is right at the parking and start of the beach.

Special activities

Punta Uva
Wonderful beach area just 9 km/5.6 mi from Puerto Viejo which is the most popular place to stay with stores and restaurants. You can rent a bicycle for about 3,000 colones/$5-6.00 US from 8am-6pm or multiple days at some places. The bike ride down there is lovely! The picture that looks like just trees has a reddish brown sloth in it. The other picture is toward the beginning of your journey into the jungle. After a couple of sloths, my camera's battery died - must've gotten turned on in my bag, so I didn't get any pictures of the little white faced monkeys - sorry!
