New York City played a pivotal role in the naming of March as Women's History Month. In 1979, Sarah Lawrence College hosted a 15-day conference about women's history that led to the creation of a national week commemorating the topic. The next year, President Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8, 1980, as National Women's History Week. By 1986, 14 states marked Women's History Month, which gained national designation the following year.
