Where do you stay when you travel? If you're like most people, you probably stay in a hotel of some sort – maybe a chain, maybe a boutique, or maybe something uber-luxurious. Or maybe you go the guesthouse/bed and breakfast route. If you're a serious budget traveler, you probably stay in hostels.
As travel has become more and more popular, the range of accommodation options has rapidly expanded. These days, we're spoiled for choice, whether it's a hotel, hostel, or Airbnb that we're searching for.
Regardless of your travel style, though, there's really no denying that some accommodation providers have gotten so creative and gone so above and beyond that there are now bucket lists out there filled solely with cool places to stay.
If you're working on your own bucket list of this sort, here are a handful of places you'll definitely want to lay your head some day:
The Giraffe Manor
Located in a suburb of Nairobi, the Giraffe Manor is a sanctuary for endangered Rothschild giraffes in collaboration with the Giraffe Center, which operates a breeding program that's trying to save these iconic animals from extinction. What makes the Giraffe Manor so cool is that the resident giraffes stop by twice daily to poke their heads and long necks through the windows of the dining room in hopes of getting a treat from visitors. If you've ever dreamt of having breakfast with a giraffe, this is the place for you.
Skylodge Adventure Suites
Sacred Valley of Cusco, Peru
The Skylodge Adventure Suites in Peru's Sacred Valley are often referred to as the “million-star hotel.” This is because each “suite” is a completely transparent pod suspended from a cliff face high above the floor of the Sacred Valley. You basically feel like you're sleeping in the stars. (It probably goes without saying that this one is NOT suitable for anyone afraid of heights!)
The Underwater Room at The Manta Resort
Pemba Island, Africa
Have you ever wanted to be a mermaid? (C'mon, where are my fellow “Little Mermaid” fans?) If you've ever dreamed about it, then you should start saving your pennies for the Underwater Room at The Manta Resort. This luxury room is the first of its kind anywhere in Africa, and consists of two above-water floors and one underwater floor with a 360-degree reef view that will let you feel like you're sleeping with the sea life.
Holmen Husky Lodge
You'll find a few great accommodation options in Scandinavia that will let you enjoy the Northern Lights in winter, but how about pairing that aurora viewing with some adorable sled dogs? The Holmen Husky Lodge in the small Arctic town of Alta, Norway, allows you to do just that. An overnight stay includes a dogsled ride at dusk, followed by a night in a modernized Sami lavvo (kind of like a teepee). If you're lucky, you might even catch the Northern Lights dancing above your glass-fronted room.
Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse
Looking for a more remote getaway? Well, you can't get much more secluded than staying in a renovated lighthouse on an island that you have to take a boat to get to.
The Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse is an updated, luxurious retreat in an historic light station dating back to the late 1800s. There are two rooms available at the inn, but those wanting complete privacy can actually book the entire island – can anyone say honeymoon goals?
There are so many unique places to sleep these days – everything from yurts to treehouses to fancy “glamping” sites could also easily find a spot on this list.
