Naturally, you could go to Times Square or Central London to welcome 2017, but you’d be packed in with hundreds of thousands of other people. Instead, why not choose one of these four unique places to celebrate:
Vail, Colorado, United States: This popular skiing destination hosts one of the most lovely New Year’s Eve celebrations. Annually, skiers and snowboarders carry bright glow sticks as they make their way down the Golden Peak, forming a glowing train from the top to the base of the mountain. After the Torchlight Parade, the city hosts fireworks, and guests can go back to their lodges to warm up in front of the fire with mugs of hot cocoa and mulled cider.
The exceptionally brave (or crazy) can start New Year’s Day with a plunge into the icy waters of the Vail Valley, along with other daring ice swimmers. Stay at the luxurious Sonnenalp or the more modest Evergreen Lodge in the heart of Vail, within walking distance of most of the slopes.
Jaisalmer, India: If you prefer sun to snow, head to the sand dunes of Jaisalmer, where you can have an unforgettable New Year’s Eve experience. Take a camel trek beginning at sunrise on New Year’s Eve, and head through tiny villages in the Rajasthan dunes, winding up the evening with traditional dancing, a huge feast, and fireworks. If trekking isn’t for you, stay in the gorgeous, sprawling Suryagarh Hotel, with its clay bricks that make it look as though it sprang up from the desert floor. Take short day trips to explore the dunes.
Kiribati, Samoa: Samoa is the first country in the world to welcome the New Year, and the South Pacific island celebrates in style with traditional dancing, fire throwing, and plenty of delectable foods. Stay in the beautiful Seabreeze Resort, located on white-sand private beaches along the clear blue waters. Or opt for villas at the Sinalei Resort, which offers outdoor showers warmed by the Samoan sun.
Ferryboats and Cruise Ships: Cruising can be a wonderful way to enjoy New Year’s Eve, especially since many ships dock at ports with magnificent fireworks displays. Plan ahead for 2018 New Year’s Eve by booking a cruise with the Azamara Quest, for example, that takes guests to the air show, Harbor of Light parade, and the famous fireworks above the Sydney Opera House. Or take a short boat ride out to Boston Harbor to see the city’s beautiful fireworks displays from a wonderful point of view at a very reasonable price. If you have a bit more to spend, you could even try New York City’s Harbor Lights cruise, which includes a buffet meal and a live DJ, along with amazing views of the Times Square fireworks – without the crowds.
No matter where you celebrate, we wish you a very happy and joyous New Year!
