Six Essential Fall Food Festivals

Guest Blogger

Forget sweaty days and blazing heat: fall is here!  And, some of the year’s best food festivals come with the cooler weather.  Loosen those belts because you’re going to want to indulge at these amazing food festivals.

Oktoberfest, Munich, Germany:  There’s only one beverage worth drinking at the 200-year-old Oktoberfest: beer, beer, and more beer.  It’s fame has spread across the world and there are hundreds of cities that host their own Oktoberfest celebration, though none are as fantastic and fun as the original in Munich, Germany.  More than 7 million liters of beer are consumed at the Theresienwiese Fairgrounds over 16 debauchery-filled days.  Pace yourself and eat plenty of bratwurst and pretzels at what some consider the world's largest frat party.

Galway Oyster Festival, Galway, Ireland: Ireland’s largest food festival brings loads of briny oysters paired with a tall pint of Guinness (of course.)  The festival queen, named the Oyster Pearl, presents the first oyster of the season to the Galway mayor, leading into days of festivities, including the frantic oyster shucking at the National and International Oyster Opening Championship.

Atlantic Antic Festival, Brooklyn, New York:  New York’s largest street festival brings together local and national vendors with some of the city’s best restaurants’ offerings.  Though the festival certainly includes street fair favorites like funnel cakes, sausage sandwiches, and roasted corn, you can also find international delicacies like grilled sardines, banh mi sandwiches, barbecue, and halal options.  The motto of the festival is, “Eat it at the Antic, walk it off on Atlantic!”

Alba International White Truffle Festival, Alba, Italy: Every year, the small Italian hillside city of Alba turns into a decadent gourmet festival, celebrating the delicate and expensive white truffle.  While the invite-only truffle auction can fetch up to $100 for a single ounce of white truffle, visitors can bask in the pungent aroma and have feathery slivers of the fungus shaved on top of their pasta.  And, yes, it is far more appetizing than it sounds!

Life is Beautiful, Las Vegas, Nevada: Life is Beautiful in Las Vegas, Nevada, is a relative newcomer to the festival scene but it has made a huge impact.  Focused on connecting amazing musicians, inspiring people, and delicious food together, Life is Beautiful has become one of the fun food festivals in the country.  This year, celebrity chefs include Duff Goldman and Adam Sobel, while Nobu and Give Me S’more will be on the restaurant list.

New York City Food and Wine Festival, New York, New York: Presented by Food Network and the Cooking Channel, the New York City Food and Wine Festival is where the celebrity chefs play.  Giada de Laurentis, Bobby Flay, Ted Allen, and Mario Batali will all be hosting sessions and seminars.  Hundreds of chefs speak at the event and the Tasting Tent is inside a massive 135,000 square foot space.  What’s even better is that 100% of the proceeds benefit the New York-based charities, Food Bank for New York City and No Kid Hungry.

Wherever your travels and taste buds take you this fall, there is a rich offering of festival delights!  Have we touched upon your favorite fall festival?  If not, tell us what destination you’d recommend!
