Pack This: Must-Haves for Summer Travel

There are certain things that deserve a spot on every summer travel packing list – things like sunglasses and sunscreen, and enough entertainment to keep everyone occupied during those long car rides and flights.

This summer, though, take your packing game to the next level. Here are five gizmos and gadgets that will not only make traveling easier this summer, but will also win you some major cool points from family and friends.

A power bank

No one wants their phone to die in the middle of a poolside selfie session with friends, or while they're filming their family getting silly during cruise-ship karaoke. Or, even worse, when they’re relying on their GPS for driving directions!

To avoid phone shut-down while traveling, carry a power bank so you can charge your phone on the go. You may want a small one hardly bigger than a credit card. Or maybe one that looks like a duck or a popsicle, like these from BUQU. It’s up to you!

Solar-powered backpack

Want to take gadget charging to the next level? Pick up a solar-powered backpack like this one from BirkSun. Not only can it hold everything from water bottles to cameras to beach towels, but it has a built-in power bank that you can recharge using the sun.

A cool smartphone lens

You don't need a fancy or expensive camera to keep your travel photography game

on point. All you really need is a cool lens (or set of lenses) that you can clip right onto your smartphone to add effects like fisheye, or to give you a much wider angle.

Check out the 4-in-1 lens set by Olloclip (for iPhone), as well as the clip-on lenses from Pixter (compatible with all types of smartphones).

A good speaker

A bluetooth speaker is a summer travel essential, whether you want to listen to tunes by the pool or podcasts under the stars. These speakers come in all shapes and sizes, but be sure to get one that's waterproof (or at least splash-proof) so you can take yours along to the beach or on that awesome float trip.

Multi-use clothing

Over-packing is a habit that can be tough to break, but you can cut down your suitcase weight by packing clothing items that can be worn multiple ways in different situations. (And no, not just those pants that zip off into shorts.)

For the ladies, the Versalette and the Chrysalis Cardi by Encircled can be worn tens of different ways, from scarves to tops to dresses. Adding one to your summer travel wardrobe will give you many more outfit options to choose from.

Bonus: Smart luggage

Wouldn't it be nice to have luggage smart enough to know how much it weighs and where it is when it gets lost? That's the concept behind Bluesmart, which has been  called “the iPhone of luggage.” Not only does the bag have a built-in scale and GPS system so it can be located anywhere in the world, but it can also be locked remotely AND has a built-in phone charger.

Some other gadgets that can help make summer travel more enjoyable include noise-canceling headphones, an e-reader, and perhaps an action camera like a GoPro, to help you capture all your adventures.

What are some of YOUR must-haves for summer travel?
