Nationally Recognized

In the spirit of our Great Getaway Giveaway Sweepstakes, we’re celebrating Great Getaways. Our third destination: Marrakesh (or Marrakech), Morocco! Join us as we explore the colors, people and sights of this amazing destination.

Marrakech Market.jpgMorocco for the Adventurous Traveler!
"The main square is largely open during the day and then in the evening hundreds of vendors set up "restaurants" and food carts to explore. I would definitely say that you want to enjoy the surrounding Gardens and experience some fresh olives from one of the marketplace vendors."

Marrakesh Train Station.jpgMarrakesh is Amazing!
"Marrakesh is one of the greatest cities I have ever been to in my life. The culture, the people, the food, everything in this city is great."

Marrakech Souks.jpgExotic Marrakesh Souks
"Marrakesh's winding maze of souks was unlike anything I've ever seen before in my entire life and was one of the most unique experiences I've ever had. Once you enter, try to establish your bearings because it's very easy to get lost amongst all of the incredible stalls."

Riding Camels in Marrakech Moroco.jpgWonderful Morocco
"A few friends and I traveled to Morocco to take a desert tour from Marrakech to Fez. Morocco, being in north Africa, had all the climates similar to California from the deserts and mountains, The desert oasis were beautiful and the canyons with waters were splendid."

Marrakech Building.jpgUps and downs in the Red City
"Once you learn to navigate the Medina and avoid the annoyances, it opens up the stimulating world that is around you: the smell of the spices and grilled meats, the sounds of the scooters and people haggling for goods, and of course all of the sights of Red City."

Musee Marrakech - Marrakesh Museum.jpgMusée Marrakech, Great Museum
"The museum is set in an old, classical Marrakech style building. The architecture of the building itself is truly the main attraction, as the walls are beautifully painted, wonderful chandeliers hang from the ceilings, and seemingly every window has a new design."

The People and Colors of Marrakech.jpgLast and best Marrakech hang-out spot
"I did succumb to paying a few dirham to the colorful watersellers for a photo of them in their traditional garb, but managed to escape the clutches of the python handlers, who'd tossed a snake over my neck, grabbed my camera to take a commerative photo, and then tried to extort 200dh - more than 20 bucks! - for the "service"."

Marrakesh Marketplace.jpgMarrakech, Morocco
"We stayed at a traditional riad (similar to an inn, with an open courtyard in the center of the building/house) in the old town to get the authentic experience. Walking around the old town, and especially the Medina (huge market in the center of old town) was a feast for the senses."

Marrakesh Riad at Night.jpgCosmopolitan City in North Africa
"Aside from this area, there are many other lovely areas to visit. One of my personal favorites was Gueliz, a French quarter that historically was home to many artists & other creative types. There was great shopping here & overall it was a cool neighborhood."

Trains in Morocco.jpgTransport in Morocco
We're departing from the format a little since we thought both of kontemplerande's stories with tips on transit in Marrakesh - both trains and taxis - were quite useful!

City Slicker
Going to Marrakech was the most exotic experience of my life. Firt-time travelers to this part of the world will be awed by the sites, smells and customs of this place. Remember to keep an open mind, enjoy the desert climate and brush up on your French before you go. Also, don't forget to try the dates (they're like candy) and the mint tea.
