Earning Participation Miles on the Barclaycard Travel Community

County Wise

I’ve posted a few of my travel stories on this website, and I’ve found the experience rewarding, and not just because I was going to earn Participation Miles (more on that in a minute). Posting a story was a pleasant walk down memory lane. It’s kind of like listening to a good song you haven’t heard in a long time. The music brings back memories from that time in your life (and hopefully in a pleasant way!). We designed the Barclaycard Travel Community with that experience in mind. At the end of telling your story you will have remembered things about your trip that you might otherwise have forgotten and you’ll also have a document of that trip that you can revisit. Plus, if it’s written well, other people can share that experience and learn more about the place you visited.

But enough of the warm and fuzzy, and back to earning miles for your participation in this community! The purpose of this blog is to dig in to how that works. So let’s get started. Registered members of the community can earn miles for 3 activities; completing a travel profile, posting a travel story (with at least 1 image) and having your story “kudoed” by other registered members.

***Updated September 7, 2017***

***Update October 28, 2015: We want to make sure that stories posted in the community are helpful to other members who are researching and reading these posts. In order to do that, we are asking for a minimum of 100 words to describe each story you post.***

Update December 23rd, 2013: We want to make sure that stories posted in the community are helpful to other members who are researching and reading these posts. In order to do that, we are asking for a minimum of 50 words to describe each story you post.

You will earn 500 miles for completing a profile and including the following information:

  1. - Creating a username
  2. - Giving us your email address (so we can tell you how many miles you’ve earned as well as update you on the latest community news; your email address will not be sold)
  3. - Entering your home town ('where you currently live')
  4. - Selecting at least one travel interest
  5. - Selecting at least one travel companion
  6. - Selecting at least one travel style
  7. -Telling us 5 places you’ve been to

Telling us where you’ve traveled will hopefully spur you on to share your stories about those trips. Selecting the travel interests, companions and styles will allow us to provide you content on our homepage that is tailored to you. Sound good?

Update (4/11/2014):

You will earn 150 miles for telling a travel story.

Up to five (5) travel stories can be posted for an individual City, State, Country.

To earn your 150 miles, be sure to share your travel story with at least a 50 100 word description, select a few basic travel descriptions, upload at one at least unique and great pic from the trip, and provide more savory details about what you saw, where you ate and stayed. At the bottom of your story we will map out your trip so you can see the path you traveled. Give it a try and give us feedback about the experience in the discussion forums. Here is a blog with tips on how to write a great travel story.

Updage 4/11/2014:

Each detail added to a travel story using the map will earn 10 miles per detail.

You will earn 10 miles every time your story is kudoed:

We want to encourage great storytelling, and who better to assess great stories than your fellow travelers?! If someone likes your story and gives you a kudo for it we will add 10 miles to your account. We also encourage you to click on stories you like to reward the storytellers. Just click on the heart at the top of the detailed story or at the bottom of the story summary. Just note that, you will not earn 10 miles for kudos of story details or images.

Those are the three ways you can earn miles within this community. You can view your “Lifetime Participation Miles” total in your Travel Profile. Miles are updated every day on this page for the previous day’s activity. If you are a Barclaycard Arrival™ World or Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite Mastercard® cardholder, your Participation Miles will be displayed on your monthly statement and will be transferred over to your account on the first of every month for the previous month’s activity. Community members will also receive an email alert that summarizes personal Participation Miles activity. And, on a monthly basis, we will send all community members a Barclaycard Travel Community newsletter that highlights great stories, helpful blogs and popular discussion topics. To learn more about how Participation Miles are updated on the community site and in your Arrival account (if applicabl....

A couple of important things I’d like to point out. You don’t have to be a Barclaycard Arrival cardmember to join the community and earn miles. However, the rewards for those miles are only intended for members residing in the United States. Also, community members who are Barclaycard Arrival™ World or Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite Mastercard® cardmembers must link their account at the Barclaycard servicing site (BarclaycardUS.com) in the Account Settings area. This is how we will know you are a Barclaycard Arrival cardmember. Why is that important?  Because the value of miles are different for Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers and members who are not cardmembers. For more information on How To Link Your Travel Community Profile, click here.

For those of you who are not Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers, the miles you earn will be automatically redeemed for an eGiftcard from a list of four major retailers. The $5 can only be utilized within the United States. Barclaycard Arrival™ World or Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite Mastercard® cardholders will have the miles added to their Barclaycard Arrival account once per month and the miles will be shown as “Participation Miles” on the monthly billing statement.

Phew, I think that’s it. I encourage you to check out the detailed disclosure for this program here.

I look forward to reading your stories on the Barclaycard Travel Community. I know I’ve enjoyed writing mine and the trip down memory lane. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do. And I hope the miles you earn will jump start your next travel story.

Thank you so much for the information along with the story. Very helpful in my future trip charges!

I've posted 30+ stories and added details and kudos, but the only miles I see on my profile are the 500 I initially received for filling out my profile (and I had to follow up with you friendly Barclays folks to get those 500 miles to show up).

I understand that the miles *should* post to my Barclaycard account on the 1st. Do they not show up on my profile until the 1st, too?

Thanks! Hard work but well worth it.

Hi, I wrote two stories and added pictures. I didn't get any points for that. What should I do?

Hi. I am new to the travel community and to the BarclaysCard. I am not clear on the difference between the Lifetime Community miles and rewards because the number of miles I earned for community participation is different than the number of reward miles I see on the card. Also, I am not sure that all the participation miles have been counted as I think the 500 miles for completion and 150 miles for each story (I have 5) and also additional details (a few) should add up to more miles that I have accrued as of today. I apologize, I just do not know if all miles show up at the end of each month or something like that? Thanks for your help! I am glad that card holders have this opportunity to participate and get rewarded and reward other travelers.

@AngelinaBlue:

As referenced above, you can view your “Lifetime Participation Miles” total in your Travel Profile. miles are updated every day on this page for the previous day’s activity. So, for example, a story written on 9/6 will be uploaded on 9/7 and will update your participation miles on 9/8. I have reviewd your participation miles and they appear to be correct.

At the end of the month, if you have linked to your account, your participation miles will post to your card on the 1st of every month. If the 1st of the month, falls on a Saturday or Sunday, your miles will post on the first Tuesday of the month. You would not see an immediate transfer to your Arrival account. Additionally, participation Miles are not itemized in the online Account Summary. To learn more about how Participation Miles are updated on the community site and in your Arrival account (if applicable), click here: http://www.barclaycardtravel.com/t5/Blog/How-Your-Participation-Miles-are-updated-on-the-Travel-Comm...

Jared the points I earn here still aren't showing up on my Barclay Arrival account. My card has been linked from the beginning. I had to write about the 500 points for my profile 2 months later to get credit. My points from my travel stories are posted here on my account (buy not to my Arrival card) but the 500 from my profile does not show in lifetime points earned in the travel community. Why does my account point counter say I need 2050 more points? I have a lot more I can add if I will get proper credit.
County Wise
Hi Jared, my account has been abnormal since last Saturday. I did not earn any points for the stories I posted in past three days. I do not know what is going on with my account. My account was good before and the points were updated daily and correctly. But suddenly, the point does not update. Thanks!

Hello, I seem to be having a similar problem with some of the users who have posted here. I've posted stories and completed a profile more than a few days ago, but I still haven't been credited with any rewards points.

Had a very busy, but fun time at Branson, Mo. They have so many attractions that you could stay busy all day. If you want to fish you can for trout on Lake Taneycoma and Table Rock Lake for other types of inland waterway fish.

Had a great time in Lake of the Ozarks with eating , fishing, and spending time with my grand son.

I just linked my card to my community, profile completed but don't see my 500 miles in my partisapation account. why not?

Hi @speil, Welcome to the Barclaycard Travel Community! Miles are updated every day in your Lifetime Total (on your profile page) for the previous day’s activity. They should appear tomorrow. Thank you!

Jared,
This is such a great idea! I live to travel! I am always looking for great tips from other fellow travelers. The next adventure is alywas just around the corner. :)

@deadperfect, did you list the 5 places you have visited?

My rewards have not been credited either. I called and was told it would show up on the latest statement. They did not. Please fix.

So did all the required steps for the 500 miles and still don't have any miles. Did I miss something? - Created a username - Gave a email address - Selected at least one travel interest - Selected at least one travel companion - Selected at least one travel style - Told you 5 places I’ve been to

Thanks for the post! Excited to start my travel blog and get rewarded at the same time.

I keep seeing a bar flash across the top of my screen when I've been writing stories, with a message. It's on so fast I can't read it, but I've caught something about "miles". How do I look these up and what are they?

Hi Jared,
I'm new to the community but already loving it for the reasons you mention in your original email. It's fun getting the points but more so the 'memory lane' aspect. I've been lucky enough to spend the past 30+ years being an ancient and medieval historian and writer, so I have gotten to lots of places and taken zillions of photos. Some are lost forever, some might be able to be retrieved from before the age of digital since the old PhotoWorks used to make CDs available for a given year. (But I have to find where I put them.)

I saw that there are 5 limits to posts for a specific city. What happens when I am posting about different parts of a country (like Greece) and Athens seems to be the only choice? My next post will be about Delphi, Mycenae, and Epidaurus.

Thanks in advance! You've won me over from the MRI site.

@Nupinheed - You need to also select a "current city" to complete your profile.

@spunkyhelenn and @ProfFrancesca - Welcome! Glad you're excited to participate! :)

@Reighn9 - The bar flash at the top of of the screen is the confirmation of an activity where you earned Participation Miles and/or earned a badge (ie. when you post a story, upload a photo, add a travel detail, etc.)

@spunkyhelenn - Thanks! So far it has been a lot of fun.

No one at Barclaycard seems to know anything about this program. Did anyone else have problems with their miles showing up on their statement? I have emailed and called countless times and no one will help figure out why, even though my card is linked, my miles are not being added to my barclaycard arrival card. VERY frustrated.
City Slicker
Thanks JaredY, this helps. I think I've just set up my profile, but I'm not seeing the 500 points. Am I missing something? Or perhaps more accurate question, what am I obviously missing? :)

Hi there, I was promised 500 points for joining plus 150 points for posting a story, and 10 points per detail. The total number of miles that have posted on my profile page is… zero. What's going on? Help.
Community Manager
Hi @Icarus, thanks for your message. I am showing 670 miles in your account so far. That is 500 for your profile and 170 for your first story. Your second story, just posted on 2/23, will not show up on your Community User Profile until tomorrow, 2/24. Participation Miles do not post to your account until the beginning of the following month (March).

Hope this helps!

I just joined the site and love your commentary!

I am so glad I came across this post since this is my first day here. The detailed information will help on my quest in earning miles, sharing travel stories, and meeting new people. Very informative! Very Helpful! Thank you!

Want to change my username. How can i do that?
Stately Explorer
This is awesome, today only i have joined the community. Great place to share your travel experience and also meeting new people. Very informative.
Stately Explorer
I think I'm going to LOVE it, too, but I want to change my username and can't get anyone to help me out, so I'm waiting to really get started!!!
Stately Explorer
I did not see an option on the travel community website. I believe you need to contact support team in order to get this done.
Community Manager
Hi @Vacating - Thanks for your comment. @BarclayRocks is correct - please email BarclaycardTravel@Barclaycardus.com with your request and someone will be happy to assist you.

"You don’t have to be a Barclaycard Arrival cardmember to join the community and earn miles. However, the rewards for those miles are only intended for members residing in the United States."

I'm a cardmember currently living abroad; does this mean that any miles I learn through the Travel Community can't be redeemed?
City Slicker
Hi, I haven't seen the 500 miles for participation yet? How do I ensure I get these miles?
Community Manager
Hi @setsurenka - I believe you are OK, but I will confirm.
Community Manager
Hi @LindsayAllyn: I took a look at your profile. If you sign in and go to "My Stories" you will see the 500 Miles showing on your profile. What you need to do to have these transferred to your Arrival or Arrival+ card is link the card. Click the link below the box which shows the 500 Miles to get started. Hope this helps!
City Slicker
This is a perfect intro to the community! Wish this blog was easily accessible (1-click) from the home page that way first time users get to really understand how to get involved in the community.

Good suggestion, @pallavipal. Perhaps we can add this to the rotating banner on the FP!

Hi Jared, Thank you for posting this! I found it very helpful. Keep up the great suggestions.

Hi: I get emails after posting stories that say I have earned Participation Miles, but they never show up on my monthly statement. Quite by accident, digging around on the website, it looks like somehow my travel account linked to my OTHER Barclay card, L. L. Bean. I do not know how to "unlink" this card and re-link to my Barclay Arrival MC and then recoup all the miles I should have been getting. TWO phone calls to customer support have yielded absolutely no results; the personnel do not seem to have the foggiest idea of how to fix this problem. Any suggestions out there?? Many thanks!
Community Manager
Hi @IslandPoet, I'm looking at your account info on the community and it is showing as Linked to your Arrival account. The widget to link a card is only available through Arrival. We'll have to have someone on our end double check this for you. Please email BarclaycardTravel@Barclaycardus.com with any follow up comments or questions.
City Slicker
Regarding the "You will earn 500 miles for completing a profile ", will I earn the point if I registered on the Travel story before I applied for a Barclay card?
Community Manager
Hi @i2000s, you will earn the points but for those who are not Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers, you will automatically be sent a $5 Amazon e-certificate every time you earn 2,500 miles. As long as the miles you earn are under this amount the e-certificate won't be issued. Not sure if that means when you get a card that the Miles would move over then. Let me check on that for you.
City Slicker
@Kati_D I got my account linked to my Arrival card, and I did received an email telling me that I have earned 500 miles by completing my profile. Thanks for your info. This is helpful :)
