Earning Participation Miles on the Barclaycard Travel Community

County Wise

I’ve posted a few of my travel stories on this website, and I’ve found the experience rewarding, and not just because I was going to earn Participation Miles (more on that in a minute). Posting a story was a pleasant walk down memory lane. It’s kind of like listening to a good song you haven’t heard in a long time. The music brings back memories from that time in your life (and hopefully in a pleasant way!). We designed the Barclaycard Travel Community with that experience in mind. At the end of telling your story you will have remembered things about your trip that you might otherwise have forgotten and you’ll also have a document of that trip that you can revisit. Plus, if it’s written well, other people can share that experience and learn more about the place you visited.

But enough of the warm and fuzzy, and back to earning miles for your participation in this community! The purpose of this blog is to dig in to how that works. So let’s get started. Registered members of the community can earn miles for 3 activities; completing a travel profile, posting a travel story (with at least 1 image) and having your story “kudoed” by other registered members.

***Updated September 7, 2017***

***Update October 28, 2015: We want to make sure that stories posted in the community are helpful to other members who are researching and reading these posts. In order to do that, we are asking for a minimum of 100 words to describe each story you post.***

Update December 23rd, 2013: We want to make sure that stories posted in the community are helpful to other members who are researching and reading these posts. In order to do that, we are asking for a minimum of 50 words to describe each story you post.

You will earn 500 miles for completing a profile and including the following information:

  1. - Creating a username
  2. - Giving us your email address (so we can tell you how many miles you’ve earned as well as update you on the latest community news; your email address will not be sold)
  3. - Entering your home town ('where you currently live')
  4. - Selecting at least one travel interest
  5. - Selecting at least one travel companion
  6. - Selecting at least one travel style
  7. -Telling us 5 places you’ve been to

Telling us where you’ve traveled will hopefully spur you on to share your stories about those trips. Selecting the travel interests, companions and styles will allow us to provide you content on our homepage that is tailored to you. Sound good?

Update (4/11/2014):

You will earn 150 miles for telling a travel story.

Up to five (5) travel stories can be posted for an individual City, State, Country.

To earn your 150 miles, be sure to share your travel story with at least a 50 100 word description, select a few basic travel descriptions, upload at one at least unique and great pic from the trip, and provide more savory details about what you saw, where you ate and stayed. At the bottom of your story we will map out your trip so you can see the path you traveled. Give it a try and give us feedback about the experience in the discussion forums. Here is a blog with tips on how to write a great travel story.

Updage 4/11/2014:

Each detail added to a travel story using the map will earn 10 miles per detail.

You will earn 10 miles every time your story is kudoed:

We want to encourage great storytelling, and who better to assess great stories than your fellow travelers?! If someone likes your story and gives you a kudo for it we will add 10 miles to your account. We also encourage you to click on stories you like to reward the storytellers. Just click on the heart at the top of the detailed story or at the bottom of the story summary. Just note that, you will not earn 10 miles for kudos of story details or images.

Those are the three ways you can earn miles within this community. You can view your “Lifetime Participation Miles” total in your Travel Profile. Miles are updated every day on this page for the previous day’s activity. If you are a Barclaycard Arrival™ World or Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite Mastercard® cardholder, your Participation Miles will be displayed on your monthly statement and will be transferred over to your account on the first of every month for the previous month’s activity. Community members will also receive an email alert that summarizes personal Participation Miles activity. And, on a monthly basis, we will send all community members a Barclaycard Travel Community newsletter that highlights great stories, helpful blogs and popular discussion topics. To learn more about how Participation Miles are updated on the community site and in your Arrival account (if applicabl....

A couple of important things I’d like to point out. You don’t have to be a Barclaycard Arrival cardmember to join the community and earn miles. However, the rewards for those miles are only intended for members residing in the United States. Also, community members who are Barclaycard Arrival™ World or Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite Mastercard® cardmembers must link their account at the Barclaycard servicing site (BarclaycardUS.com) in the Account Settings area. This is how we will know you are a Barclaycard Arrival cardmember. Why is that important?  Because the value of miles are different for Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers and members who are not cardmembers. For more information on How To Link Your Travel Community Profile, click here.

For those of you who are not Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers, the miles you earn will be automatically redeemed for an eGiftcard from a list of four major retailers. The $5 can only be utilized within the United States. Barclaycard Arrival™ World or Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite Mastercard® cardholders will have the miles added to their Barclaycard Arrival account once per month and the miles will be shown as “Participation Miles” on the monthly billing statement.

Phew, I think that’s it. I encourage you to check out the detailed disclosure for this program here.

I look forward to reading your stories on the Barclaycard Travel Community. I know I’ve enjoyed writing mine and the trip down memory lane. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do. And I hope the miles you earn will jump start your next travel story.

I have completed my profile and shared 5 places I have been to. However I still don't see any miles posted to my account. Also, I am not sure if my travel community account is correctly linked to my Barclay credit card account. Could you help me with that?

Hi @CookingApril. Welcome to the community! I see that your 500 miles have posted to your account. Participation Miles are updated every day for the previous day’s activity. Hi @ChristinaS. I received my 500 points for creating a profile, but I have also posted 4 stories and have 3 kudos that do not have points showing up under my lifetime community points. Could you please advise? Thanks!

Hi @icemanbmw1. We identified an issue with the participation miles posting yesterday, 1/29/14. This morning all the miles, including 1/29/14, were updated so your account should now reflect all up-to-date miles.

Thanks! Can't wait to get involved!

Jared, I have completed my profile about 2 months ago, but I still don't see 500 miles in my account

I am an avid fisherman so I have visited Mexico and Canada many times to enjoy my sport of choice. I have caught many bill fish in Mazatlan over the years and have even hunted for ducks and doves in Sonora and other places to the South. Mexico has imposed so many regulation that I no longer hunt there but I still have the photos and memories. My last marlin was even bit as thrilling as the first and all are burned into my memory. I love to visit and fish Queen Charlotte Islands in British Columbia, Canada. Halibut, ling cod and of curse big king salmon to say nothing abut the wildlife and eagles. I am so happy with Barclay's Bank for doing this. Tom

Hello....I don't see anyplace where you can add a travel companion and travel style?
City Slicker
Travelers should know about the Phoenix Metro bus/light rail system and fares. The free Airport Tram will take you tio the Light Rail Station where you can connect to almost any sports venue or hotel. The fare is $2.00 and youth and seniors ride for just $1.00.

@traveljunkie, It appears you haven't filled in a few other fields in your Travel Profile. You need to fill in travel companion, current home town, etc. Let me know if you continue to have issues.

Thanks for the positive feedback @Wayne-White, @tomrhardin and @slsd123!

@traveler56, you can add your travel companion and style in the Travel Profile settings (the check boxes are located at the bottom of the page). Let me know if you are still having issues. Thanks!

@ArizonaTraveler - thanks for the tips!

Well, first off, I am in love with Barclay! So is my partner, Bruno. We have found many ways to go abroad and have a wonderful time. Soon, we will be off to New Zealand. We will see sites from Auckland to Christchurch. Barclay will make our stay more pleasant due to the hotel options. I am thrilled too since they will have gyms that I am in need of to exercise my knees after a fresh surgery. I know we will love the glowing worm caves in Waitomo by boat, glaciers, Wellington's rolling hills, sand beaches, and the Maori culture. The thermal sites throughout N.Z. will be exciting to see, along with blue-green lakes. Much of N.Z. is pristine! Doubtful sound on a cruise will be a memorable experience along with Milford Sound to Te Anau. Also, the ferry will be a lovely way to cross over from the North Island to the South Island.

We will stay in a hotel where you see the penguins and one by a penguin sanctuary. I feel extremely blessed.
Barclay has made my stay more possible on my limited teacher western coast pension. Wow, a dream came true!! It took a long time, but it is happening now!

Emerald lakes, Tongariro Crossing is one of the best sites to see where The Lord of the Rings was filmed. Now you can't beat that!! What more can you ask for??

We haven't had any problems with Barclay, we love it!!!

Tongariro Crossing, where the top blue lake is, go see for yourself!! I am wishing you all my best and I hope you can use your points to do as we are abroad!

N.Z. is calling us!! Whatever is calling you, go the easy way Barclay! Thank you, Barclay!

I have been to Paris, Guatemala, Thailand, Northern Spain, Cotsa Del Sol and Barcelona, Brussels, New Amsterdam, Bruges, Peru, Ecuador and the Caribbean.

I must say Bruges was beautiful, especially the bicycle ride from Bruges to the North Sea. It was like a Monet painting along the canal with no cars. I love the wind mills in Belgium. Truly lovely!!

I will see if I can post a pic. I am learning...

Hello! I have been on this site for over a month and I know my card is connected (I even tried un-connecting and re-connecting it) -- but my miles haven't transferred over. Can you look into this? I have over 5,000 miles right now. Thanks!

Can anyone tell me why I can't post a story? Every time I get: An unexpected error occured An error occurred while creating your story. The error was: {0}

I have over 10,000 Community points, none of which have been transferred as of yet to my ArrivalCard points balance. Please advise as to when this transfer will be made. Thanks!

Hi @melfish, I'm showing miles were transferred over to your Arrival account in February and March. Let me know if you are not seeing the Participation Miles itemized in your Account Statements. (It is itemized there.)

@ChuckF We are looking into an issue with adding a story directly to your travel maps, we believe this is related to your issues. Can you post a story directly from the home page?

@tarheelbill92: I'm showing that your earliest posting was on March 5th. Your Participation Miles will transfer on the 1st of April for all of your March activity.
City Slicker
@JenniferH I get an undefined failure and error message when submitting from the home page as well. I've found no workflow where I can submit a story successfully. I've tried in both chrome & ie.

I am finally retired and my passion is to travel more for fun. I traveled extensively with my work, but you probably know that travel for work is not the same as travel for pleasure. I have worked and lived all across the US, South America and Europe. I look forward to sharing my experiences.

Jared, I completed the profile info that you requested but have yet to see my miles show up in my profile. Can you look into this? Thanks.

How long does it take for the amazon gift certificate to post?
County Wise
When the miles go over to your Barclay card is it a one for one exchange? If I have 200 miles here, is that 200 miles going to my card? Thank you for the clarification.
Community Manager
Hi @VMPDPhD: It appears that you haven't completely filled in your Travel Profile. Current home town is also required. Let us know if you are still seeing an issue. The 500 miles will post in the Travel Profile the day after you complete. Thank you!

@doctorofcredit: The Amazon e-certificates typically are emailed within 4-8 weeks.

@millejul: Yes, that will be 200 miles added to your Arrival Miles account balance (the transfer will happen on April 1st for any activity in March).

Thank you for all the questions!
City Slicker
So any word on why I get errors every time I try to post a story?
Community Manager
@ChuckF - When posting a story, please try posting 51, or more words. If the story is posted with exactly 50 words, we have an upload issue/error. A fix is in place and should be uploaded soon.
County Wise
Is there a limitation on how many miles you earn for travel stories or I can post one every day and each 200 miles for each?
Community Manager
@bengurevich Currently there is no limitation on the number of Travel Stories you can post. Yes, you can post one/day however, we stronly encourage the use of personal/original photos and content.

Question ?? Why did this site slap the descriptive ' city slicker' next to my user name. How do I change or remove it ???
Community Manager
@Arjuna That is the name of our entry level rank structure. As you move up in rank the 'rank title' will change. Everyone is "City Slicker" upon first registering on the site.

Hi Jared Just opened my acct yesterday. I filled out a profile and posted a story. NO POINTS What am I doing wrong ???

I have also received the email from barclaycardtravel which told me that my activity:my posted 3 travel story(ies);my travel stories recieved 1 kudos. However total Daily Participation Miles earned is 0.What happened?

@JaredY - Hi and thanks for answering questions on here. I just tried calling folks from Barclays and all 4 agents had no idea about this community.
My question is - how do I see these miles post to my Arrival account? When I look at my Rewards History it doesn't show any transactions for these going to my card (but some are there).
Second - just got a strange email today saying the normal "Congratulations" but it said I earned 0 miles for 23 stories and 4 kudos? Is there a glitch or what is happening?
Thanks again.
City Slicker
Hi Where are my miles ? It seems like everyone is having trouble getting miles posted. This needs to be fixed ASAP. We shouldn't have to fight for every mile. This travel community is suppose to be enjoyable !!!
Community Manager
Everyone, Due to the technical issue we are having with the daily miles update, your totals have not been updated since Monday. Rest assured, we ARE tracking all activity on the back end. The technical issue with the miles incorrectly totaling in the Daily Alert emails that were sent on 4/1 was a result of the transfer of all March miles to the appropriate Arrival accounts. Again, we are tracking everything successfully on the back end and all totals will 'catch up' when the issue is resolved.

@Arjuna: I'm showing your travel profile as complete, three stories posted and five kudos tracked. Your miles will update when the tech issue is resolved.

@ChuckF: I was able to successfully post a test travel story under your account. Please advise if you are still having issues.

@lianglu78: See my comments above regarding the tech issue with miles updating.

@davefyfe: We are looking into your Customer Service experience and apologize our representatives were not able to provide additional information. See comments above regarding the tech issue.

@FurryFreddy: Thank you for your comments, we are working on the resolution to the tech issue. Again, rest assured we are tracking all activity on the back end. Thank you everyone for your patience with these issues!
Stately Explorer
Any idea when the glitch will be resolved? My points haven't been posting correctly since Sunday (the 30th)... I've gotten an email a few days ago stating that I had posted stories and received kudos, but that my participation miles earned were "0", and then I haven't gotten emails since, except for one posting one days' worth of miles to my account. I'm still waiting on all of the other day's miles to post.... thanks!

Love this community, so much great info for future trip planning!

Very helpful article! Thank you so much for the overview :)

When are the points supposed to transfer to Barclay Credit cars rewards (I have linked the accounts)? I thought it is supposed to happen at the end of the month but today is 10th and mine still have not transfered. Anybody else has this issue? I also can't find out phone number or email for travel comunity customer service in case of issues like this.

@bengurevich - Activity posted in April will transfer over on May 1st. If you had activity in March that you have not seen credited to your Arrival miles total on April 1st, let me know. You can email us at BarclaycardTravel@BarclaycardUS.com To learn more about how Participation Miles are updated on the community site and in your Arrival account (if applicable), click the link below. http://www.barclaycardtravel.com/t5/Blog/How-Your-Participation-Miles-are-updated-on-the-Travel-Comm...
