December 2017. We started at 4:45am with only the light of the moon and flashlights to guide us. It was otherworldly to be hiking on lava fields and to be surrounded by darkness. We trekked for 90 minutes until first... we smelled it. The faint noxious odor of sulfur. Then we felt it... intense heat imminating from beneath our feet. Then we saw it... the LAVA! We meandered around the field for about an hour and stood in awe at the magnificent sunrise. On the hike back to our car, we experienced a rain shower which allowed a 180-degree rainbow to appear. The contrast of the colors on the light spectrum against the stark contrast of hardened lava rock was amazing.
