I guess there's a phenomenon called the Sanibel stoop. And if you go to Sanibel Island you will probably figure out what it is.. it's that hunched over position of looking for shells! We did it for hours upon hours when we visited Sanibel as the shelling is the best in the world! The island itself is very natural, quiet, relaxing and beautiful. Bowman's Beach is a public area where you can pay to park and go collect all the shells your heart desires! Be sure to check the tide schedule as high tide is not the best time to go! There is also a shell museum and a large shell store where you can learn about all the different shells and maybe identify your own.
This is a very nice and clean hotel on the ocean. Great place for shelling.
Points of interest
This is a great place to check out all the different types of shells you will be finding on the island. More than just Sanibel shells. Lots of nice shell art and crafts too.
Sanibel Community Playground
This is a very nice playground with nice equipment. Very clean and good for older and younger children.
It's not just a bridge to get to the island. The views are amazing. We stopped and watched the birds and fishermen and boats. Lots of places to park.
The education center at the refuge is so well done. Very nice gift shop. Well informed attendants to help you decide the areas in the refuge to explore.
This is the main drag on Sanibel and the traffic seems to never stop. But there is a nice bike path that follows alongside it and lots of cute shops.
They have a lecture and presentation about their efforts in rehab. All the exhibits are well done. Very interesting place to visit.
The lighthouse on the island has lots of history and a great shelling beach. Nice place to bike ride to.
We went here twice while on the island. Hand crafted ice cream. I loved the raspberry swirl with chocolate and the garbage can flavor (all kinds of candy bars in vanilla ice cream!)
Great breakfast place with reasonable prices. The eggs benedict was my favorite.
We loved the chicken here and all the fixins it came with, mashed potatoes, collard greens, biscuits, cornbread. All delish!
Excellent wildlife protected area on Sanibel. Nice trails for walking and driving to see Florida wildlife.
