The Cinque Terre is one of the most famous and captivating coastline areas of western Italy. The main towns visited are relatively close together, and can be reached easily by train or ferry. There is a hiking trail also, that one can hike between the towns. The ferry offers the best views along the way, but often the weather causes the ferry to not be operating. But a train runs back and forth from La Spezia to the last town of Monterossa. A day pass allows unlimited trips back and forth between the towns. Often crowded, the trains nonetheless offer a fun and inexpensive way to see this engaging and beautiful area.

Lenin1991 I visited there in October 2011, just two days after the floods -- couldn't even get to Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, and all available boats were being used for recovery ops. Happy to see it has bounced back so well!
